PARK WARRIOR CENTER
As part of Park's Department for Military and Veteran Student Services, the Park Warrior Center provides information and resources for service members and veterans transitioning out of the military. The PWC helps veterans on such topics as education, employment, finances, relationships, post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury and transition. The Center's staff increase the ease with which military students and veterans can get information to enable them to move forward with their college careers.
"The Park Warrior Center helps inform students about their educational benefits, work with students being deployed or returning from a tour of duty, help with access to health care and counseling services, assist with employment searches and provide references or assistance in anything else the veteran requires," said Stephen Terry, director of military and veteran student services. "The new department and facility enables the Center to reach out to more veterans and better accommodate those who come seeking assistance."
The Park Warrior Center features laptops, a reference library, a relaxation station and other amenities to best serve the needs of service members, veterans, wounded warriors, family members, caregivers, dependents and spouses.
"More than anything else, the Park Warrior Center is a really important place for people to get to know each other and rely on each other for help and support," Terry said. "It's also a community. It's a common space for the student veterans. When people join the military or become a veteran, they are part of a big family, and families take care of each other."
In late 2008 and early 2009, two pioneering donors, R. Crosby Kemper Jr., with UMB Bank, and Thomas Holcom, with Pioneer Services, embraced the idea of a center at Park serving wounded military members. Together, they provided $150,000 worth of start-up funding. In the spring of 2009, Park was one of 20 higher learning institutions in the country — and the only one in the Midwest — awarded a $100,000 Success for Veterans Award Grant from the American Council on Education and the Walmart Foundation, which was used to create the curriculum for veterans and wounded service members.
Together, these gifts gave Park the financial support to create the program, the services and the Center. Kemper and Holcom, along with Lt. Gen. Robert Arter, who with his wife contributed a painting for the PWC's office.
